How to Decorate Your New Coastal Home
September 29, 2021
There’s something about a coastal town that invokes feelings of peace and serenity, and we want you to feel that way every time you step into your Wilkinson Home. While you may be inclined to give a nod to nautical style, there is a way to add in those elements without going overboard. Read on to see some of our top coastal home decorating tips.
Focus on Soft Tones
Like we said above, peace and serenity are already feelings brought about by being near the coast, so it’s easy to build on what your surrounding area offers. When first decorating your home, it’s best to start with a calming base which typically means focusing on using soft tones throughout the majority of the house. That doesn’t mean you can’t add in color, but the color should never be overpowering. Light colored accent walls, blankets or wall art are always good places to start adding in color.
Use Stripes and Seashells Sparingly
Bringing nautical style into your home is one of the easiest ways to create coastal energy, but it’s important to be selective when choosing those pieces. It can be easy to get carried away with this type of design, but when they’re added in small amounts, the effect can be breathtaking. Adding in striped accent pillows is an easy way to pay homage to the sailor style. If you want something a little more authentic, take a trip to the beach and see what you can find. Adding driftwood and seashells to your home decor can be a great way to add depth into your home.
Incorporate Wicker, Sisal and Whitewashed Accents
In any home, adding in texture is one way to keep the style fresh. For coastal homes, one of the best materials to use is wicker, and there are plenty of ways to easily add this into your design. Adding in wicker accent chairs, end tables or dressers can bring out a beach home feel without overpowering your space. You don’t only have to look at adding this texture through furniture, however. Wicker decor can be easily found through light fixtures, baskets and wall hangings.
Incorporating sisal rugs into your home is another way to add in a popular design element while also choosing a material that is durable to use in a coastal home. There’s no need to worry about sand and dirt ruining this type of rug as it is easy to clean and maintain.
Adding in whitewashed elements is another way to give your home a tried and true beach look. This could be added through an intricate bed frame or a bathroom vanity. It could also be added in with smaller design elements such as vases, decorative mirrors or picture frames.
Keep it Comfortable
Most importantly—keep it comfortable. If you pair large plush living room furniture, soft knitted blankets and warm natural lighting together, your house will always feel like a cozy coastal home.
